A fall mantel in three colors
The Mantel in Layers
The mantel is the one place I let fall pile up a little. Not clutter, layers. A wreath over the mirror, oak stems at one end, candles at different heights so the light moves across the shelf.
I keep the palette to three colors: olive, rust, and cream. Velvet pumpkins on one side, a stoneware vase on the other, and a bead garland spilling off the edge to soften the straight line of the wood.
Light the tapers when the sun goes down. A mantel with unlit candles looks like a store display. A mantel with lit ones looks like someone lives here.
